Painting Orcs a new shade

23 February 2012 2 Comments

I’ve been dabbling with multiple painting orcs (I first showed here) with a new shade this last fortnight. Trialling four differing recipes I was envious of, yet with each test piece, it became obvious I wasn’t going to find that happy median between visceral and fantasy. Until I sat back and just stuck to working with tones and forgoing an obsession with highlighting. Considering I have a huge amount of models to cover in my Warhammer Quest project, simplifying my work would be a good idea.

The following ugly git has received these blended colours :

Charadon base : Knarloc mix : pure Knarloc : Devlan/Black wash (particularly key, work it into natural shadows) : Knarloc lightening :  Camo green mix : Camo green fine edges. Then Calthan brown for snout and mouth. Mechrite red eyes with a dot of blazing orange to make them piercing. I’m pleased with the result and after a dozen photos, this one captured the subtle tones the best. Even still, they look better in person.

Painting Orcs

First time these guys encounter the heroes in Quest, I think it will be menacing indeed.

I really like how you have darkened the area underneath the eyes. It’s very realistic and gives the impression of the dark, underdweller who hasn’t seen the sun in quite some time.

Thanks, admittedly that was unintentional, I was aiming more that the glowering look a tired person gets (dark rings and all); but for an orc it just makes them more menacing. It doesn’t hurt that it helps the eyes pop even more on a dark background.
