Heroquest, The Beginning
|The single most influential boardgame of my life.. is Heroquest. A Milton & Bradley game developed with Games Workshop over 25 years ago.
The figures have always influenced the visual style I most associate with Warhammer, and even though loosely based on Warhammer Fantasy Old World, the cross over of many similar figures of the time with the original board game set have insured it’s continued presence and nostaligic gaming for me personally.
A good friend of mine when I was younger often played the Barbarian whilst I ran with the Elf. These are the two original models, with slight modifications in recent times. They now continue on their adventures together in Warhammer Quest. In their wake has risen several new heroes that I have modelled for Heroquest.
Even more so, the denizens and character cards have evolved too. This continual converting for Heroquest has long kept it a staple game to play on occaision with friends.
Besides more minions there has been a lively community of modders and converters for Heroquest, even a few suppliers of parts. Personal favourite forum has been, Ye Olde Inn Blog and Forum.
In recent years I also worked with Zac, of Resin Addict and BattleGroup Helios fame, to produce accurate 3D CAD tiles to add further models to the game without the need to hack and chop irreplaceable models.
I still stock these and sell them cleaned for immediate use, in sets of 4 for $8AUD.
The latest iteration of the tiles, above, using high quality resin, same brand as Forgeworld
Another great supplier of 3D parts for Heroquest is Zealot Miniatures Dungeon range.
When it comes to Heroquest, I think I can be bold enough to state, if was not for my seeing it in Loganholme Shopping Centre, Gold Coast, Australia in November 1992.. everything I have created for Warhammer, my interest in Graphic art and sense of adventure, would have ever come to pass.
Love the Marauder Beastmen and Minotaurs
Thank you Herman 😀 Some of my favourite classic models 🙂
For Oldhammer I mainly collect Perry Beastmen. They are awesome. Here is my WIP from the Advanced HeroQuest Fighter based on the Forge World Blood Bowl Model. I used your site as a Reference. If you don’t want me to I will delete the tweet:

Oh man thats great! 😀 Thanks for the shout-out!
Have you thought about redesigning the individual rooms on the original hero quest board? I have had success playing with my kids on a “Discoverable” board cut from MDF, but would love a print-and-play version like you have with some of the other games.
Thanks for coming by! Heroquest ehh? Why whats better than Heroquest!? More Heroquest! Honestly, I had not thought of that – I’m pretty sure one of the major Heroquest resources has the rooms as is, but in tile format.
Are you thinking; WHQst size, Heroquest aesthetics?
I have been cutting/printing everything at 1″ squares – including AHQ and WHQ rooms. There are a few options out there for modular HQ rooms, but the quality isn’t there for some reason…
