Hi Gabriel, this would be my first foray into using Vallejo Paints, which as lead to a 50/50 split in my paint collection since then. 🙂
The Colours are – Base: Vallejo Model Colour Dark GRey 994, followed by main colour Model Colour Dark Blue Grey 904 (I then mix white for soft highlights).
These paints are very Matte. So the finish is nice and drab and works with the desert scheme 🙂
You mean the dragonfly-like drone? Those are Space Marine Missile Launcher muzzles; they come separate to the main tube in the Space Marine Tactical Squad kit. Hope that helps! 😀
Gosh, been awhile – I believe I used Shadow Grey base, (blue ink wash), then Ultramarines Blue sweep on lighter side, followed by Space Wolf Grey highlight then white extreme highlight on edge with the light source dot. I drybrushed a very light dusting of Space Wolf Grey about the socket for the glow sfx. Some of the paint names may have changed, so basically need a dark blue, mid blue then light blue. White for highlights. 🙂
Much appreciated! On that note, the classic tau desert scheme, I love the blue you use on the occasional panel and shoulder pad and am attempting to replicate it. That said, I cant seem to get the color to look as good as yours. am I correct to assume that Vallejo Model Colour Dark Grey 994 is the base used for the recesses, while Model Colour Dark Blue Grey 904 is essentially the “main” color? Followed by some sort of highlight. Sorry if this is a very basic question to ask, but my using of 904 on top of 994 produces a much brighter blue in comparison!
Hi, you’re welcome 🙂 – checked my notes, its definitely basecolour ‘Vallejo Model Colour Dark Grey 994’ then Model Colour Dark Blue Grey 904 over top. Some subtle highlighting with a touch of white mixedin could be causing issues – however that is fine highlights on edges only. OHHHHH!!!!.. I think I know what is going on – I used a semi-matte varnish that deadened the brightness on all models. (Facepalm) Of course.. this would dullen the results. This makes sense, Vallejo are great on colour consistency so I was confused too. These days I use a matte medium, I think I rave about it somewhere on the site. POssibly something on my instagram account back in the day – I’ll email you the brand.
Hi Arc – massive apology, I thought I had sent this link. THis is the Matte Varnish I use which can dullen the paint and give a slightly darker tone. https://www.constellationhobbies.co.nz/products/ak-interactiveak081darkearth35ml additionally on vehicles and suits – I have used a wattyl matte varnish which does deepen colours a bit too.
after all these years (old att days), your tau are still the nicest I’ve seen
did you mask off the tank pattern yourself with tape or use a stencil of some sort?
Cheers man! Hmm.. I recall mostly outlining with a fine brush (watered down so as not to make a dry ridge of paint), to be filled in with broader brush after. I think I used masking tape on single sections for a straight line here and there, however in general – all freehand as mentioned.
Heya,
I am in love with your dark blue / blue colour scheme and I know that long time has passed, but by any chance do you remember the recipe how you achieved it?
I always wanted to paint my Tau as a Night skin from CS:GO but I could have never pinpoint matching paints.
They look amazing! I’m starting with T’au, I’ve just bought a box of Pathfinders because I’m heavily inspired by yours. Which paints did you use for the camo clothes? And where did you fond the inspiration for the scheme??
Wich color did you use for the pastel blue markings on the vehicles, infantry and battlesuits?

What did you make the drone with the turbine engines out of?

Hi! Years on now so hopefully you get this!
This has inspired me to start my first 40k army. Could you possibly tell me fatigues and armour colours used for the blue and desert scheme?
Email underway Sir! 🙂
What paints did you use to paint the blue lenses of the “classic” tau colour scheme? It’s an excellent effect!

I hope you see this,
Thanks in advance!
Hi Konrad – cheers man! I can do you one better, here is a full breakdown of how I went about it: (Guide)Classic and Urban Tau Painting Guide
They look amazing! I’m starting with T’au, I’ve just bought a box of Pathfinders because I’m heavily inspired by yours. Which paints did you use for the camo clothes? And where did you fond the inspiration for the scheme??
Thanks a lot!
Thanks! Pathfinders are really unique troops, quite like them myself. You can actually follow a guide here: https://www.eastern-empire.com/classic-and-urban-tau-painting-guide/
Inspiration was originally from seagull eggs – their mottling to hide them in the brush is similar. 🙂
Thank very much, Sebastian! I hope I will achieve these shapened edches on my armors!
