Warhammer Quest Dwarf Ranger
|Finally put aside some time to paint this guy up.
Part of a three stage character, he is one of several potential NPCs (that friends can control) who may encounter the young knight during the campaign.
The idea behind his design was to move away from the ready to roll highly equipped Dwarf archetype into a more vulnerable but still knowledgeable character. I also want to peel back ridiculous amounts of armour to look into a hero who has simpler gear; more ready to trek.
In building this guy, from the new plastics which I like the design of I saw potential for three stages.
This simply garbed hero with basic hand axe and wooden shield evolving into a seriously armed dungeon tank we know and love.
While I dislike the monopose format of the kit, it did open up this opportunity, that with some creative carving and painting I could give him a substantially different look.
For example, behind that beard is a fully painted leather jerkin – which in retrospect was a waste of time given it is now hidden. Haha.
Parts used include; classic wooden shield, Dwarf banner pendant boss, Dwarf Quarrel bag, Dwarf Miner backpack (7th edition), Axe (7th edition) cut down into handaxe size. Empire wizard hood and a few greenstuff touches.
Look forward to painting up the next couple of stages, but between now and then I have a few items to prepare for the first games.
- Edit – Parts List:
Classic GW Fantasy Shield
Icon from Dwarf Ironbreakers Banner
Hand axe head from 6th edition Dwarf Warriors
Hood from Empire Mage sprue
Backpack from Dwarf Miners sprue
Extra pouches from Dwarf Warriors 6th Edition.
Body and arms from current Dwarf Ironbreakers plastics
Boots are carved down from present boots
thanks for reading!
Sebastian.
He looks very good, Seb! I’m really digging his low-key, travelling gear. Lovely green on his cloak as well.
And I agree, not every dwarf should be completely incased in plate armour. In fact he only looks tougher for wearing less armour. After all dwarves are tough because they are dwarves, not because they always wear armour… This guy only proves that.
Thanks Modhail π
Look forward to finishing the other two as it will be interesting see if I can capture that progression slowly enough π
Agreed he looks great the perfect companion for the Runic Thor. When you use these extra chars you use the standard dwarf barbarian rules + extra rules for special equipment?
Thanks Huib, and indeed yes – with themed tweaks to suit the character more. If one of my friends takes him over – it’ll be up to him/her as to how the Dwarf evolves. π
Btw the runic Thor model is one of my favouritesites what parts was he again just half chaos warrior half marauder with an empire head? Or did you use beastmen arms? Just out of curiosity ofcoursr not that I want to copy π
Erm. you like.. picked everything hahaha (Maruader chest from Cavalry set). Only unique things are a classic Dwarf hammer from 5th edition and the Ogre belly plate for his shield. It was an Empire Greatsword head I believe. π
Fantastic looking! The hood is a great touch, one you don’t see very often with dwarves.
Thanks again – I thought so too, the seentialy fashion statement for any Ranger worth his long trekking salt. Had to figure a way to work that in there as it harks back to classic rangers; and nowadays folks subconciously can recall Aragorn with his hood as a “Ranger”
All traveling dwarves should have hoods, ideally color coded… I think I read that somewhere. π
Lovely conversion, and great paint job that really brings it to life.
Thank you – I’ve noted his blanket roll blends in; it is decidedly a darker, more blue shade of green than his moss green hoodie.
Very right you are sir – I thought of Autumn colours – but Green suits Dwavres well enough – I look forward to revealing his later progression variations. π
Yes greatswords I gathered all the mats always thought the shield was from the skeleton set
That’s also what I love about old who that’s it battle hardened people from each side of the world not the superhero kind from the new silver tower. Not to say that’s bad tho just feel this has soo much more fantasy and role play element to it. It’s the style of the old world that speaks to me. The new who silver tower has its merits too but not enough bad guys. And the player chars look like they rip all the bad ones apart. Most being bigger and all
Yeah this would be my sentiment; not overly fussed with Superhero movies as they never truly seemed imperiled like a normal guy who’s become an adventurer.
This is superb, I’ve been visiting this post over and over. May I ask how you did the 5oclock shadow on the head?
Hi Necrobutcher,
My apologies – missed answering this before! Basically I paint the head usual, then do a light black wash (very light) then a soft dry brush of grey to give that fresh scalp look. The whole process is deft touch π
Wow! Looks awesome as usual, as with the Thor (always great to see another pic of him BTW!) he doesn’t look like your average dungeon adventurer, but its the look I’ve always wanted for my games.
I think though, and I’m sure others will agree with me: you REALLY need to put a comprehensive list of the parts you use! I’m not saying I’m going to copy you, but i want to! :p
Chuckle thanks Paul! – I think I may have to do a parts list update. I’ll put it here but email you in the background π
Found this conversion on Pinterest.
Just wanted to say I think it’s great! Really captures that Ranger look.
Thank you! I’m particularly proud of this one; he’s one of a 3 Stage Hero set: Dwarf 3 Stage Hero
